I love it especially for its unhurried, quiet dignity.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eBoundless River\u003c\/em\u003e for concert band is inspired both by feelings of nostalgia and the sense of infinity that rivers suggest to me. The work's main theme, first stated by the clarinets, meanders gently - rising and falling from phrase to phrase. The music breathes, ebbs and flows, rises and falls in gentle waves of sound. Sometimes it suggests a peaceful meditation; other times it cries out. Still other times it sparkles like rivuletes of water reflecting sunlight. In 1755 they were driven out by the British, eventually resettling in South Louisiana. Today there are nearly a million French-speaking descendants of the Acadians living in Louisiana and parts of Texas, preserving many of the customs, traditions, stories, and songs of their ancestors.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAlthough a rich Cajun folksong tradition exists, the music has become increasingly commercialized and Americanized throughout the twentieth century, obscuring its original simplicity and directness. In response to this trend, Alan and John Lomax travelled to South Louisiana in 1934 to collect and record numerous Cajun folksongs in the field for the \u003ci\u003eArchive of Folk Music\u003c\/i\u003e in the Library of Congress. By doing so, they helped to preserve Cajun music in its original form as a pure and powerful expression of Louisiana French Society.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\"La Belle et le Capitaine\" and \"Belle\" can both be heard in their original versions on the Lomax recordings (Swallow LP-8003-2, Swallow Records Co., Ville Platte, Louisiana). \"La Belle et le Capitaine\" tells the story of a young girl who feigns death to avoid being seduced by a captain. Its Dorian melody is remarkably free, shifting back and forth between duple and triple meters. In this arrangement the melody is stated three times. The third time an original countermelody is added in flutes, oboe, clarinet, and trumpet.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\"Belle\" is about a man who goes away to Texas only to receive word of his sweetheart's illness, forcing him to return to Louisiana. Finding her unconscious upon his return, he pawns his horse to try to save her, to no avail. The folk melody is sometimes varied rhythmically, texturally, and coloristically, and an original melody (see mm. 12-21) is added for variety.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn performance, be sure that the crescendo from mm. 74-82 gradually builds to \u003ci\u003efortissimo\u003c\/i\u003e. The overall character of this version is considerably brighter and crisper than that of the original, and though the written and agogic accents are important, they should never be overstated. Clarity, transparency, and momentum are the important factors in order to preserve its dance-like effect.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCajun Folk Songs is composed as a tribute to the people of the old Cajun folksong culture with hopes that their contributions will not be forgotten. There is disagreement among historians concerning the origins of their names. Some claim that the river and valley were named in the 1750's by the Cherokee as a friendly tribute to a visiting Iroquois Chief named Skenandoah. Others suggest that the region was named not by the Cherokee, but by the Senedo Indians of Virginia Valley. In the Senedo tradition, \u003ci\u003eShenandoah\u003c\/i\u003e means \"Daughter of the Moon,\" and bears no relation to the Iroquois Chief Skenandoah. The origins of the folksong are equally obscure, but all date to the 19th century. Our three most popular editions are in fact of 16th-century music, namely: \u003ci\u003e#1: Fanfare Ode \u0026amp; Festival, #2: The Battle Pavane, #3: Belle Qui Tiens Ma Vie.\u003c\/i\u003eAlthough \u003ci\u003eRoyal Coronation Dances \u003c\/i\u003eis derived from the same source as \u003ci\u003eFanfare Ode \u0026amp; Festival, \u003c\/i\u003ethey are treated in different ways. I envisioned this new suite programmatically -- hence the descriptive movement titles, which I imagined to be various dances actually used at some long-ago coronation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe first movement depicts the guests, both noble and common, flanked by flag and banner bearers, arriving at the palace to view the majestic event. They are festive, their flags swirling the air, their cloaks brightly colored. In the second movement, the queen in stately measure moves to take her place on the throne as leader and protector of the realm. In the third movement, the jesters of the court entertain the guests with wild games of sport. Musically, there are interesting sonorities to recreate.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eVery special attention should be given to the tambourine\/tenor drum part in the first movement. Their lively rhythms give the movement its power. Therefore they should be played as distinctly and brilliantly as possible. The xylophone and glockenspiel add clarity, but must not be allowed to dominate. Observe especially the differing dynamics; the intent is to allow much buzzing bass to penetrate. The small drum (starting at meas. 29) should be played expressively, with attention to the notated articulations, with the brass light and detached, especially in a lively auditorium.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt is of some further interest that the first dance is extremely modal. The original is clearly in G mixolydian mode (scale: G-A-B-C-D-E-F-G). However, other editors might put in F-sharps in many places (changing the piece almost to G major), in the belief that such ficta would have been automatically put in by the 16th-century performers as they played. I doubt it. I have not only eschewed these within the work, but even at the cadences. So this arrangement is most distinctly modal (listen to the F-naturals in meas. 22 and 23, for instance), with all the part-writing as Gervaise wrote it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the second movement, be careful that things do not become too glued together. In the 16th century this music might have been played by a consort of recorders, instruments very light of touch and sensitive to articulation. Concert band can easily sound heavy, and although this movement has been scored for tutti band, it must not sound it. It is essential, therefore, that you hear all the instruments, with none predominating. Only when each timbre can be heard separately and simultaneously will the best blend occur, and consequently the greatest transparency. So aim for a transparent, spacious tutti sound in this movement. Especially have the flutes, who do this so well, articulate rather sharply, so as to produce a chiffing sound, and do not allow the quarter-notes to become too tied together in the entire band. The entrance of the drums (first tenor, then bass) are events and as such should be audible. Incidentally, this movement begins in F Major and ends in D Minor: They really didn't care so much about those things then.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe third movement (one friend has remarked that it is the most Margolisian of the bunch, but actually I am just getting subtler, I hope) again relies upon the percussion (and the scoring) to make its points. Xylophone in this movement is meant to be distinctly audible. Therefore, be especially sure that the xylophone player is secure in the part, and also that the tambourine and toms sound good. This movement must fly or it will sink, so \"rev\" up the band and conduct it in 1 for this mixolydian jesting. An army of 7,000 Highlanders were defeated on April 16, 1746 at the famous Battle of Culloden Moor.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt is this same battle that indirectly gives rise to this beautiful song. After the battle, many Scottish soldiers were imprisoned within England's Carlisle Castle, near the border of Scotland. \"Loch Lomond\" tells the story of two Scottish soldiers who were so imprisoned. One of them was to be executed, while the other was to be set free. According to Celtic legend if someone dies in a foreign land, his spirit will travel to his homeland by \"the low road\" - the route for the souls of the dead. In the song, the spirit of the dead soldier shall arrive first, while the living soldier will take the \"high road\" over the mountains, to arrive afterwards.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe song is from the point of view of the soldier who will be executed: When he sings, \"ye'll tak' the high road and I'll tak' the low road\" in effect he is saying that you will return alive, and I will return in spirit. The second half begins in sharp contrast to the first, playfully bouncing quiet little fragments from one player to another, and slowly evolving into a return of the opening dance. But much more well-known today is Praetorius' 1612 collection of 312 dances from the royal courts of France, known as Terpsichore, named for the Greek Muse of dance. These dances were not composed by Praetorius; instead, he recorded and harmonized the melodies into three, four, five, and sometimes even six parts in order to avoid their imminent extinction. In my setting for concert band, three dances from the collection are featured; Springtanz, Leaping Dance; Der Lautenspieler, the Lute Player; and Der Schutzenkonig; the Archer King.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTo favour Praetorius' infatuation with different musical instruments, this setting for band employs a variety of colours, and features the soloist and section alike. Performers are invited to play in a most animated nature to reinforce the strong sense of pulse required in all dance music. The work’s title is drawn from the last line of the Latin text, Lux aeterna: “\u003cem\u003eet lux perpetua luceat eis\u003c\/em\u003e” (and let perpetual light shine upon them). The idea of light as both protector and illuminator was constantly in my mind as I composed the piece. Two kinds of light comprise the work: one soft and meditative, the other more sparkling and effervescent. Also in mind were the respective personality traits of the two dedicatees, Jack being more thoughtful and introspective, Laura being more spontaneous and gregarious.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA simple call motive begins the piece, introduced by the clarinets. Its two main notes form a descending minor 3rd, a sound that is universally associated with a call or greeting (think “yoo-hoo”) but also widely associated with playground games and nursery rhymes. This idea is laced into the entire fabric of the piece, sometimes serving as transition material, other times appearing unexpectedly for purposes of contrast, still other times flowering into main melody.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe main melody is at once longing and noble in quality, and is constructed in a way that suggests the notion of infinity. Its accompanying harmony depicts a kind of bellows or the act of breathing, in and out perpetually. It never settles on a final chord, but instead moves to a built-in modulation, compelling the melody to repeat itself in a chain of new keys.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA faster, more energetic middle section serves as a dramatic contrast, but rather than give it a new theme, I chose to continue with a variant of the main melody. The accompanying harmony is still breathing, the lyrical line still permeating the entire section, but this time building to a tremendous climax. The final coda is a brief meditation. Both were composed more or less simultaneously, and both were born out of the same source of inspiration. Singing and dancing were vital components of Shaker worship and everyday life. Over 8,000 songs in some 800 songbooks were created, most of them during the 1830’s to 1860’s in Shaker communities throughout New England.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMy work is built from four Shaker melodies – a sensuous nature song, a lively dance tune, a tender lullaby, and most famously, “Simple Gifts,” the hymn that celebrates the Shaker’s love of simplicity and humility. White-note clusters are sprinkled everywhere, like streaks of bright light. High above, the Eb clarinet shouts out the main theme, while underneath, the low brasses punch out staccatissimo chords that intensify the dance-like energy. Fleeting events of many kinds are cut and pasted at unexpected moments, keeping the ear on its toes. The movement burns quickly, and ends explosively, scarcely leaving a trail.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe second movement, \"Dreams Under a New Moon,\" depicts a kind of journey of the soul as represented by a series of dreams. A bluesy clarinet melody is answered by a chant-like theme in muted trumpet and piccolo. Many dream episodes follow, ranging from the mysterious, to the dark, to the peaceful and healing. A sense of hope begins to assert itself as rising lines are passed from one instrument to another. Modulation after modulation occurs as the music lifts and searches for resolution. Near the end, the main theme returns in counterpoint with the chant, building to a majestic climax, then falling to a peaceful coda. The final B-flat major chord is coloured by a questioning G-flat.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe finale, \"Apollo Unleashed,\" is perhaps the most wide-ranging movement of the symphony, and certainly the most difficult to convey in words. On the one hand, the image of Apollo, the powerful ancient god of the sun, inspired not only the movement's title, but also its blazing energy. Bright sonorities, fast tempos, and galloping rhythms combine to give a sense of urgency that one often expects from a symphonic finale. On the other hand, its boisterous nature is also tempered and enriched by another, more sublime force, Bach's Chorale BWV 433 (Wer Gott vertraut, hat wohl gebaut). This chorale -- a favourite of the dedicatee, and one he himself arranged for chorus and band -- serves as a kind of spiritual anchor, giving a soul to the gregarious foreground events. The chorale is in ternary form (ABA'). In the first half of the movement, the chorale's A and B sections are stated nobly underneath faster paced music, while the final A section is saved for the climactic ending, sounding against a flurry of 16th-notes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMy second symphony is dedicated to James E. Croft upon his retirement as Director of Bands at Florida State University in 2003. Acadiana honors that heritage, and completes a trilogy of Cajun inspired works I have composed for concert band over a twenty-five year period. The trilogy, comprised of Cajun Folk Songs (1989), Cajun Folk Songs II (1996), and the present work (2015), draws from personal childhood memories growing up in South Louisiana, and captures in music my lifelong love of Cajun music and culture.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAcadiana is composed in three movements. The first is a bright and lively dance that makes use of two different Cajun rhythmic features: 1) un valse in deux temps (a waltz in two times), a Cajun dance rhythm that alternates between triple and duple meters; and, later in the movement, 2) a lively Cajun two-step dance.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe second movement, composed in memory of the victims of Hurricane Katrina, serves as the emotional heart of the entire work. It is constructed as a set of six variations on an ancient Cajun ballad, La fille de quartorze ans, (The fourteen-year-old-girl). The melody, which doesn’t appear until about ninety seconds into the movement, is first stated by the piccolo and tuba four octaves apart from each other. As the variations unfold, the music slowly grows in volume and speed, finally bursting out into a wildly chaotic climax. Amidst this chaos, several old Cajun folk songs make short, cameo appearances, and combine with original music to create a complex, frenzied texture that reminds me of some of the wonderful melodic pastiches of American composer Charles Ives. The energy eventually collapses into dark and powerful sustained brass chord, which in turn slowly gives way to a final, prayer-like statement of the melody.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBeginning without a pause, the final movement is an exalted dance that makes use of a variant on an old Cajun folk melody whose origins are clouded by history (as is the case with so many folksongs). The tune may have first appeared in the folksong Jeunes gens campagnard (Young Country Gentlemen); however, many years later, in the late 1920s, a variant of the tune was used for the song Allons a Lafayette (Let’s go to Lafayette). My own melodic variant is quite removed from either of these ascendants, while still upholding their inherent joie de vivre. From beginning to end, the finale is an exuberant celebration of life. However, after completing it I knew that the traditional jazz influences dominated the work, leaving little room for my own musical voice to come through. I felt a strong need to compose another work, one that would combine my love of early jazz with my own musical style.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eBlue Shades\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFour years, and several compositions later, I finally took the opportunity to realize that need by composing Blue Shades. As its title suggests, the work alludes to the Blues, and a jazz feeling is prevalent -- however, it is in not literally a Blues piece. There is not a single 12-bar blues progression to be found, and except for a few isolated sections, the eighth-note is not swung.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe work, however, is heavily influenced by the Blues: \"Blue notes\" (flatted 3rds, 5ths, and 7ths) are used constantly; Blues harmonies, rhythms, and melodic idioms pervade the work; and many \"shades of blue\" are depicted, from bright blue, to dark, to dirty, to hot blue.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAt times, Blue Shades burlesques some of the clichés from the Big Band era, not as a mockery of those conventions, but as a tribute. A slow and quiet middle section recalls the atmosphere of a dark, smoky blues haunt. An extended clarinet solo played near the end recalls Benny Goodman's hot playing style, and ushers in a series of \"wailing\" brass chords recalling the train whistle effects commonly used during that era.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlue Shades was commissioned by a consortium of thirty university, community, and high school concert bands under the auspices of the Worldwide Concurrent Premieres and Commissioning Fund. The main theme that follows, stated by the horns, reveals a more lyrical, serene side of the piece. A second theme, based on a simple repeated harmonic pattern, suggests yet another, more poignant mood. These three moods - hope, serenity, and sadness - become intertwined throughout the work, defining its complex expressive character. A four-part canon builds to a climactic quotation of the Columbine Alma Mater. The music recedes, and an offstage trumpeter is heard, suggesting a celestial voice - a heavenly message. Now, several years later, I realize the remarkable inspiration Ticheli’s music has made on my own writing and growth as a musician.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBecause of this, \u003cem\u003eShadow Rituals\u003c\/em\u003e was written particularly for the Manhattan Beach Music Frank Ticheli Composition Contest and I dedicate it humbly to Frank Ticheli.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA few comments on conducting are in order: tempo is very important to maintaining the energy of the piece. Particularly for the first 45 measures it might be helpful to conduct using “small beat patterns,” that is, relatively tiny conducting gestures for the quarter notes, and somewhat larger conducting gestures for the main beats. There is more than one possible approach: you can conduct quarter, quarter, quarter, half to emphasize the 3+2 nature of many of the 5\/4 measures. Since the contrapuntal accompanying lines will not always be in the same rhythmic pattern as the melodic lines, you will need to consider both the overall effect of the lines’ relationships to one another, and each line’s rhythmic detail to best reach your own interpretation. Most important, you must strike to keep the intensity and tempo at an exciting and consistent level.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor the calmer section (measures 82-116), it seems appropriate to conduct in a “halftime” feel—that is, conducting only the stronger beats. In the next eight measures, there is a canonic treatment of the theme, followed by a two-measure transition. The next eight measures (meas. 19-26) contain a diminution of the theme (with the theme played in 8th notes), presented against staccato quarter note accompaniment. Beginning at measure 27 the theme is heard in the relative major key (E-flat major). The arpeggios float to the top for the restatement, with the melody moved up to the higher brass. Solo flute soars above the band or a poignant episode answered by tutti Ist clarinets. An impassioned close fades to nothing. What is clear is that arranging Ave Maria for band is not an easy feat. In less secure hands this could go badly. But this arrangement, quite honestly, is a miracle.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003e\"With the possible exception of Mozart, no other composer in the history of music ever surpassed Franz Schubert's genius for melodic writing. His lieder (art songs for voice and piano) were composed at an astonishing rate, and number in the hundreds. Some of Vienna's greatest singers were his closest friends, and he took pleasure in creating his songs for them. One of his most well-known songs, \"Ave Maria,\" was composed in 1825 when he was 28 years old.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eIn my setting, I considered carefully the problem of translating piano music to the wind medium without compromising the dignity and beauty of the original. To have simply transferred the piano part literally to the winds would have resulted in a timid and thin sound. For me, the solution was to find and connect the multiple melodic layers implied by the piano figurations, creating a richer, more polyphonic texture suitable to the winds. I had lots of fun dissecting and re-assembling the piece, and I took occasional liberties in the process, but I never strayed far from the basic harmonic structure of the original, and I strove hard to preserve a Schubertian elegance and grace.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eThere are other differences between the two versions. In Schubert's setting, three verses of text are set to the same music. With the absence of the text in my version, it seemed sufficient to state the verse only twice, and it seemed necessary to find other ways to control and vary the dramatic flow. I took liberties with the octave placement of the melody, and rather than repeat the second verse literally, I constructed it as a subtle variation of the first. Finally, and perhaps most obviously, I changed the basic pulse of the original from the eighth-note to the quarter for greater ease on the eye.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eEven without its text, Schubert's song sounds more devotional than virtually anything he ever composed. I kept this at the front of my mind throughout the creative process.
