One of the best known of Bach's pupils, Johann Philipp Kirnberger published this 1777 collection of dances with the aim of developing a student's sense of time and rhythm. Kirnberger mixes pieces in the traditional French dance style - Passepied, Gavotte, Gigue, Musette, etc. - with more up-to-date pre-Classical forms, including a Polonaise and Cossack.
