Young's Clarinet Rhapsody begins with a bang, but quickly subsides into a sinuous melody for the soloist. Rhapsody remains the watchword for the work entire, as the clarinet muses its twisted and languid path to an extended cadenza. (There is an optional longer cadenza by Tim Bell, included in the score and part.) The tessitura of the solo is generally in the upper register. An unexpected shift occurs without warning, and the band suddenly enters with a dynamic and rhythmic subject. The clarinet is provided ample counterpoint to this to the energetic end.
