Grainger originally composed Colonial Song for two voices (soprano and tenor), harp and full orchestra as a Christmas gift for his beloved mother. The composer himself later orchestrated the work for marching band in 1918. The intention of the sentimental piece was to evoke the scenery of his native homeland, Australia.
