Cannonball Adderly was an early influence over Davidson's jazz playing, this influence is also evident in this semi-improvisation based on the chords of Autumn Leaves. It's a modern Bop style promoting study of the articulations, harmonic, melodic and thematic approach used in this style.
Davidson decided against accompaniment, as the pianist would need a jazz background. This necessitated more momentum and fewer rests in the clarinet part than would have been the case in a true jazz context.
The Autumn Cannon Ball can be played by jazz oriented students with some freedom and classically oriented students by playing attention to the articulations etc. Apart from being a stylistic study it also served as a study of improvisation.
