Composer: Frank Ticheli
Grade: 6
Publisher: Manhattan Beach Music
Frank Ticheli's monumental first symphony for Concert Band is a landmark work in the repertoire. Symphony No. 1 is a large-scale, multi-movement tour-de-force demanding the highest level of ensemble skill and musical sophistication — a defining work for collegiate and professional ensembles.
From the brilliant fanfare opening, and in the perfect orchestration by Gary D. Green, Ticheli's first symphony announces its serious intent. The menacing and violent third movement, Profanation, is surely performable by itself, although the 4-movement arc of the work (Of Youth; Of Wisdom; Profanation; Prayer) İs an ideal way to hear it. The final movement features solo tenor voice and band.
