Velocity is a fast and edgy piece for an advanced string ensemble. The almost relentless semiquaver figures and melodies drive the piece forward and create anxiety and uneasiness throughout. The main theme in b.19 should still be punchy and with lots of energy. A brief shift to F major in the middle section provides a welcome relief from the tension before the melody makes it way back to the A minor tonal centre. There are numerous challenges throughout the piece for all players including sautillé stroke for the semiquavers, high position work and tricky rhythmic figures.
